People of every corner in the world look forward to this time of year. That is of course for no other reason than Christmas. The annual quest to find the best Christmas presents and Christmas trees are magical in Europe! There are many Christmas markets in Europe which allow you to dwell in the beautiful atmosphere of Christmas. Below you can find a list of cities which host the best Christmas markets!
- Vienna (Austria)
Vienna already is a fairy tale city but it seems that it is becoming more popular by the year. Every year from November Vienna changes to a Christmas city. Across the whole city you will find performances, activities and stands. The Wiener Christkindlmarkt in the beautiful Rathaus is the most famous and oldest market. This market exists for 700 years and is still charming! From 20 November until 3 January the city you can enjoy this experience.
- Copenhagen (Denmark)
Santa Claus originally comes from Greenland (belonging to Denmark), so it is only logical that Copenhagen is perfect for experiencing a real Christmas spirit. Though it is cold, it feels like there is a huge warm blanket over the city. There are different Christmas markets but the one in Tivoli park is recommended. The park is completely transformed into Christmas itself! The Christmas Market is hosted from 22 November till 8 January
- Oberhausen (Germany)
Oberhausen is famous for its shopping mall CentrO, an enormous indoor shopping mall. But from 14 November untill 3 January the whole shopping mall is turned into a Christmas Market. Actually, the Christmas market is built around the shopping mall. Just like Munster, you are able to find yourself having fun shopping. And yes even with your kids, it is very nice!
- Valkenburg (The Netherlands)
One of the most particular Christmas markets in Europe is located in Valkenburg. The market is held in the ‘Fluweelengrot’ and the ‘Gemeentegrot’ and is the biggest indoor Christmas Market. Besides the Christmas stands, you can find a gigantic nativity made of sand. It is also very interesting above ground because the many activities and the Christmas parade make Valkenburg loveable! You are able to view this event from 22 November until 2 January.
- London (England)
London is the place to be to do your Christmas shopping. From 20 November until 3 January the city is extra attractive and everything is beautifully decorated. The stores and the streets are full of Christmas lights. Just everywhere you can find Christmas trees and lights, so it is a perfect moment to visit the capital of England. Also in London you could visit different Christmas markets and ice rinks. The best markets are located near the London eye, Hyde Park and Serpentine Road.
- Brugge (Belgium)
Brugge is seen as the most beautiful Christmas city of Belgium. In particular, the big illuminated skating rink on the “Grote Markt” is what makes it so special. The skating rink is surrounded with chalets who offer Christmas items, art and nice food and drinks. There is a second Christmas market in Brugge located on the “Simon Stevinplein”, the busiest shopping street of the city. The city center gives an Medieval and intimate ambiance and this makes it a beautiful décor for the Christmas market. As you see Brugge is a wonderful destination for a winter weekend trip! You are able to view this event from 22 November until 2 January.
- Tallinn (Estonia)
Every year has Talinn, the capital city of Estonia, a Christmas market. During this event the city is shrouded in a fairy-tale like atmosphere. The location of the Christmas market is Raeokoja Plats in front of the city hall. The Christmas market consists of various stands with traditional Estonian food, souvenirs, a thousands of lights and wonderful ice sculptures. During this time choirs and dance crews give various and many shows. The Christmas Market is hosted from 22 November till 8 January. Talinn is a beautiful spot for a winter city trip and the romantic atmosphere makes it a perfect get-away for two.
